Products Research Group at Procter & Gamble are working on understanding the needs of consumers and designing holistic propositions (product & communication) that would deliver against these needs. To design winning holistic propositions we need to develop benefits that only our products can deliver to consumers. This is done via deep understanding of 1) our formulations; 2) the mechanisms occurring in consumers' homes; 3) what is available today in the market; 4) how to communicate our technical benefits; 5) Intellectual property.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong set of interpersonal skills and technical background and a passion for applying science to real cases to prove his/ her capabilities.

We are looking for an intern with scientific background that is studying for a PhD, with strong analytical and chemistry skills to be able to complete the analysis of the formulations and understanding of the mechanisms.

The work will involve partnership with professionals of several different disciplines and understanding consumer in different parts of the globe so it is imperative that the candidate has strong interpersonal, collaboration skills and ability to integrate knowledge. Having worked abroad would also facilitate the interactions and understanding consumers needs. Experience in market analysis and IP studies will also aid the creation of insights.

As a full member of the team, you will have ownership for your projects, designing and executing experiments and models, with the opportunity to present your work to Senior Management. You will work in professional and entrepreneurial cross-functional teams in one of the company's major business organisations. Corporate and specific job trainings will be provided to accelerate your development. You will be given increased levels of responsibility based on your proven capability to produce outstanding results.

12 months contract based in Longbenton, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

A position focused on fermentation of probiotics and/or fermentation to recover expressed active; such as protein/enzyme synthesis and/or fermentation to produce sustainable materials (i.e. bio-refinery processes). With focus on strain development, optimization of fermentation, isolation and lyophillization conditions to maximize stability and efficacy. Develop mechanistic understanding relating process conditions to physical and biological properties of the cell and stability and efficacy. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplined team of microbiologists, microecologists, immunologists and bioinformaticians focused on developing new probiotic based products.

Qualifications

Job Responsibilities:

To lead probiotic fermentation optimization work and develop core capability - facility optimization and core knowledge.
Evaluate and optimize culture conditions (experimental and fundamental) (sequence data, stress protein, metabolite data) etc. to increase the stability, efficacy and yield as end points.
Develop mechanistic understand of factors impacting stability, efficacy of harvested product.
Development of supporting methodology to assess stability and efficacy post-fermentation (flow cytometry, stress genes, i.e. RT-qPCR).
Optimize isolation and evaluate the effects of downstream processing on stability and efficacy.
To provide support and guidance on scale-up, working with the plants.
The position requires attention to detail. Oral and written communication skills, flexibility, dedication, and the ability to work as part of a team.

Additional Job Requirements:

PhD in Life Sciences and/or appropriate engineering degree and/or MD or DVM degrees - preferably with 3 years industrial experience in fermentation.
Extensive experience optimizing fermentation and down stream processing.
Experience working with probiotics and/or metabolites/lysates.
Experience scaling fermentation processes.
Excellent communication skills.

The Procter & Gamble (P&G) London Innovation Centre (Egham, United Kingdom) is responsible for the development of new Health Care and Beauty Care consumer products. We employ a diverse range of R&D Scientists, with a wide variety of technical disciplines and nationalities. We pioneer the development of new technologies and innovations in consumer product categories that improve the health, lives and wellbeing of the worlds' consumers. We do this through application of leading edge science and technology, combined with a deep understanding of consumer needs.

We are a major industrial partner in a new FP7 Marie Curie ITN program entitled 'Soft, Small and Smart: Design, Assembly and Dynamics of Novel Nanoparticles for Novel Industrial Applications'. As part of this program we have a vacancy for a PhD student to work on a challenging and exciting research project, to study tribology and friction in consumer goods products. The project will involve experimental investigations of how a range of responsive hierarchical polymer nanoparticles synthesized by our EU partners may be tailored and employed to modify the frictional properties of such products. The work will also involve synthesis and characterisation of these new materials, using established techniques such as the surface force apparatus, atomic force microscopy and X-ray scattering, as well as unique custom built instruments at P&G.

As a PhD student, you will be formally employed by P&G and join a talented team of P&G research scientists and will be enrolled in a PhD programme at the School of Chemistry, the University of Bristol, to drive this cutting edge research. You will also have the opportunities to engage in interactions and collaboration with ~ 14 other ITN PhD students from 10 EU partners in the programme, and will be required to attend training courses held in several EU countries. The position is available from Oct 2012 and will be for 3 years.
